A fairly new topic to me this week was Free Software vs. Open Source Software, from what I gathered from the seminar, Open source software (in plain English) gives the license holder the chance to study, adapt and improve the design of the licensed software through the source code of the computer software. Free software sometimes referred to as open source software can be used, copied, modified and redistributed. The majority of free software is distributed online but it can also be sold for costs of distribution, and the public is free to sell copies at any cost. I guess you could say, free software gives users to cooperate and to control the software they use. Also another way that although similar Open source is a recently new term made-up for marketing purposes by those who needed to put a more "business- friendly" face on the concept. (Interesting yet comical)
Some other notes I took from the seminar were that Linux is a widely used operating system like windows and Macintosh, Adam seemed to like it more due to the ease and economics, It is the same as Microsoft but the software is all free and in some cases better than windows, I feel we have been bombarded with Microsoft marketing so that is why the majority have become used to this system. Also GNU is another Operating system with free software stemming from community development, GPL has a CNU Public Licence which protects user rights from changing the work and CopyLeft – users rights to copy. This seminar as I sit in class, somewhat, went over my head, however I think I grasped the major points ( Lucky there is no exam on it!!)
For the final 2 assessment pieces I have decided to take a further look into On-line dating and associated topics, also the many ways and forms of communication one can now find on the internet to meet “the one”, have a fling or completely take the piss for a good half an hour and then block them until next time.
I’m still to decide on what media to present my presentation on, either PowerPoint or 3 minute music video clip may be the go, possibly with the song “touch me” or “me so horny” or something else revolving around love or comedy hehe. . .
Til later..
